Riding asks a great deal of us – physically, mentally and emotionally. Equestrian psychology recognises that confidence, performance and partnership are shaped as much by our mind as by technique. As riders, we invest time, care and effort into our training, yet the psychological side of riding can often be overlooked.
When confidence wobbles, pressure builds, or fear lingers longer than expected, it doesn’t mean something is wrong. It simply means that the mind and nervous system need the same attention and training as your skills in the saddle.
Calm, confident riding isn’t a personality trait. It’s something you train.
Equus Coaching combines evidence-based psychological science with real-life equestrian knowledge to build confidence and performance that holds up under pressure.

Your Coach
integrative psychotherapist, psychologist + coach
With over 25 years’ experience in psychology, coaching and behaviour change, alongside a lifetime in the equestrian world and more than a decade running an equine-assisted therapy and riding centre, my work brings structured psychological science into everyday equestrian life.
I hold a Master’s degree in Psychology, specialist training in evidence-based approaches including CBT, ACT, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy and Mindfulness, and I am a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society and a Registered Member of the NCIP.
But beyond qualifications, I understand riders, the early mornings, the responsibility, the partnership, the pressure, and the confidence dips that can follow setbacks. Whether I’m supporting a competitive rider, young person, professional coach or someone seeking therapeutic support, my aim is the same:
To build psychological strength that feels calm, reliable and natural, so you can ride and live with clarity, make confident decisions and rediscover the enjoyment that brought you to horses in the first place.
This isn’t surface-level mindset work. It’s applied psychology adapted specifically for the equestrian world.

Equestrian psychology applies evidence-based psychological science to riding, performance and the horse–rider partnership.
Riding isn’t just technical. It involves two nervous systems interacting in real time. Your regulation, attention and emotional responses directly influence communication and clarity in the saddle.
Equestrian psychology goes beyond surface-level mindset work. It draws on established approaches such as performance psychology, nervous system regulation and neuroplasticity to retrain fear responses, build psychological flexibility and strengthen confidence under pressure.
This work isn’t about becoming fearless.
It’s about becoming steady, responsive and consistent, so confidence feels reliable, not fragile.
Join me for this live, psychology-led workshop designed to help you understand fear, rebuild confidence and feel calmer and more in control in the saddle. Whether you’re returning to riding after a fall or simply want to feel steadier and more confident, this workshop is an ideal starting point. It has been amazing. I would absolutely recommend Lucy.
I have definitely achieved what I wanted to, and feel much calmer. I’ve noticed as well that I am much less stressed with a difference in my ability to relax and to be less and less worried about things. I have found it so helpful. I think all the different aspects and working step-by-step to get a solution have just helped massively. The personalised audios are just brilliant, and because it’s working! The biggest change for me is having the courage to be more assertive, clearing my mind, getting clarity on my thoughts and the relaxation exercises have all been hugely beneficial too. I felt really supported throughout everything explained thoroughly and clearly. I’ve always felt very relaxed, comfortable and confident. Safe in your hands. Thank you. It has been amazing. I would absolutely recommend Lucy.

I felt really supported throughout and looked forward to each of our sessions.
I’ve made a lot of changes, making more time for myself and sleeping better. I felt really supported throughout and looked forward to each of our sessions. It was a really good experience, I feel I’ve achieved what I wanted to do, still lots to do and manage in life, but I have lots of ways now that I can help myself more, which is great.
