home education horse care online

A friendly, online horse care & learning club for home educated young people.

Equus Pony Club is a welcoming online learning space, created for home educating families and their horse loving children and teens. Sessions are live, interactive and grounded in kindness, curiosity and responsible horsemanship, without the need to ride or have access to a horse. These sessions also complement riding lessons or pony ownership by building knowledge, confidence and understanding beyond time spent in the saddle.

As a home educating parent myself, I know how important it is to provide learning that sparks genuine interest while still supporting literacy, communication and social and emotional development. Horses offer a powerful and engaging way to do just that.

Equus Pony Club combines:

  • Horse care & welfare knowledge

  • Understanding behaviour (horse and human)

  • Social & emotional development

  • Literacy, communication & thinking skills

Through horse care and behaviour topics, young people naturally build knowledge, confidence and wider skills.

Supporting home education through a love of horses.

Equus Pony Club is not only about learning horse care, we also support wider educational and emotional development in a natural and engaging way.

When children learn through a topic they genuinely care about, motivation increases, and learning deepens. Horses provide a rich and meaningful context for developing literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and creativity, alongside social and emotional skills.

Through discussion, reflection and structured activities, young people are supported to:

  • Strengthen descriptive writing and vocabulary as they learn.
  • Develop comprehension skills through horse care and routines.
  • Build numeracy awareness through feeding quantities, routines and practical problem-solving.
  • Practise observation and analytical thinking when interpreting behaviour and welfare.
  • Grow confidence in expressing ideas and participating in group discussions.
  • Inspire creativity through art-based activities and mini-projects.
  • Develop empathy, emotional awareness and perspective-taking.

What is Equus Pony Club?

Equus Pony Club is an online learning programme designed especially for home educated children and young people who love horses.

Each block runs for a set number of weeks (usually 6), with one-hour live sessions each week. Sessions follow a clear learning focus and can be attended as standalone classes. However, when booked as a full block, learning builds progressively from week to week, allowing young people to deepen their understanding and develop greater confidence over time.

young people will learn:

  • How horses think and communicate
  • Responsible horse care, stable management and welfare

  • Safety around horses and thoughtful decision-making

  • Behaviour and emotions

  • What it means to be a kind, knowledgeable equestrian

Sessions are live, interactive and age-appropriate, delivered in a calm and supportive small-group setting. Each includes a mix of teaching, discussion, practical examples, real-life scenarios and gentle reflection. Learners are encouraged to contribute in ways that feel comfortable for them, and there is no pressure to speak or contribute before they feel ready.

rider workshops online

starts every tuesday from march 17th spring 2026

Week 1: Describing Horses

We explore common horse colours, face and leg markings, and how to describe horses accurately. By practising careful observation and clear description, learners can strengthen their attention to detail, vocabulary and confidence in expressing ideas clearly.

Week 2: Understanding Horse Behaviour

We look at how horses communicate through body language, sounds and expression. By recognising that behaviour always has a reason, learners can develop empathy, perspective-taking and greater emotional awareness, both in horses and in themselves.

Week 3: Grooming & Health

Sessions focus on daily care routines, basic health awareness and grooming, recognising what is “normal” for a horse. Learners will think about the responsibility of horse care and noticing changes, as well as strengthen observation skills and learn the importance of caring for others.

Week 4: Tack & Equipment

Learners will be able to identify the main parts of the saddle and bridle and additional equipment for riding and training horses. We will look at the purpose of tack, comfort, fit and safety. This week encourages cause-and-effect thinking, responsibility and understanding how small details can affect horse and rider safety and well-being.

Week 5: Feeding, Water and Digestion

We look at how a horse’s digestive system works and why forage, fibre and consistent routines are so important. Understanding how feeding affects health, which develops cause-and-effect thinking, responsibility and thoughtful care.

Week 6: Horse Care throughout the Year

We look at horse care throughout the year, including field safety and stabling and turnout routines. Learners explore common seasonal challenges and design a simple yard plan, considering safety, shelter, turnout and stable management. This builds planning skills, problem-solving and thoughtful risk awareness.

frequently asked questions

Equus Pony Club is generally aimed at young people aged 8–15. However, maturity and interest level vary, and parents are best placed to decide whether the content and format feel appropriate for their child.

Sessions are delivered in a calm, structured and inclusive way, and are suitable for many young people, including young people with SEND or SEMH needs. If you’re unsure whether it would be a good fit, you’re very welcome to get in touch to discuss your child’s needs before booking.

No. Horse ownership and riding experience are not required. The sessions focus on knowledge, understanding and discussion, so they are suitable for both riders and non-riders who love horses.

There is no pressure to speak or contribute before they feel ready. Children can participate in ways that feel comfortable for them. Sessions are structured, inclusive and delivered in a supportive manner.

Equus Pony Club is an educational enrichment programme rather than a formal qualification or exam preparation course. However, many of the topics covered align with areas commonly included in Pony Club, BHS or NVQ-style horse care assessments.

While it is not delivered as a specific exam-preparation programme, the knowledge and understanding developed provide a helpful foundation for young people working towards practical assessments.

We are also exploring opportunities to support AQA Unit Awards, which will offer learners the opportunity to achieve a recognised award for completed learning. More information about this will be shared soon.

A device with internet access is required to join the live Zoom session. For quiz-style sessions, a second device can be helpful but is not essential.

Families can book individual sessions or a full block. Full blocks offer better value and provide a structured learning journey.

Sessions are delivered in a calm, structured and inclusive way. If your child has specific needs, you’re welcome to get in touch to discuss whether Equus Pony Club would be a good fit.

For safeguarding and group safety, we ask all learners to begin each session with their camera on so that everyone can be seen and welcomed into the group.

After the session begins, cameras can be turned off if needed. We encourage learners to remain present and engaged in a way that feels comfortable for them, and we understand that some young people may prefer to participate with their camera off at times.

If your child has specific needs around camera use, please feel free to get in touch beforehand.
