enhance your coaching with practical rider psychology

Rider Success Coach is a rider psychology professional development programme. You will learn how to support your clients’ success with practical psychology and mindset tools that enhance your coaching and your rider’s results. Because when your riders progress and thrive, your coaching does too.

Equestrian Performance Coaching

For coaches who want the best results for their clients.

The Rider Success Coach Programme supports riding instructors and equestrian coaches who want better results for their clients, not just technically, but mentally and emotionally too. Whether your work is teaching, on a yard, or in a competitive environment, the Rider Success Coach programme will help you respond confidently to the mental and emotional challenges riders bring to their training.

As coaches, we see it every day:

  • Fear that blocks progress

  • Confidence lost after a fall or difficult ride

  • Those who perform well at home but struggle under pressure

  • Riders who “know what to do” but experience anxiety or inconsistency

This programme gives you the psychological understanding and tools to support your riders more effectively. You’ll leave with clarity, confidence and professional boundaries intact. No prior psychology training is needed, and everything is taught in a clear, practical, coach-friendly way.

Support riders mindset alongside skills and training.

Rider Success Coach helps you support your riders’ mindset alongside riding skills and training, in a way that is practical, ethical and evidence-based.

This rider psychology training programme is ideal if you work with nervous or anxious riders, or if you regularly see confidence issues, fear or overthinking limiting progress in your coaching sessions.

Importantly, Rider Success Coach does not train you to become a therapist. Instead, it equips you with a clear psychological understanding and practical tools you can use confidently within your role as a coach, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Through the programme, you will learn:

  • How psychology affects riders learning, confidence and performance

  • To recognise common mindset blocks in riders

  • To use simple, ethical, evidence-based psychology tools in everyday coaching

  • When a rider may benefit from additional psychological or therapeutic support

so you’ll feel more confident supporting riders to:

  • Work through fear, anxiety and loss of confidence
  • Understand and manage stress responses in riding

  • Respond more helpfully to self-talk, perfectionism and overthinking

  • Develop focus, presence and emotional regulation in the saddle

  • Set psychologically supportive goals that encourage progress

  • Recognise when progress is being limited by mindset rather than skill

A structured approach to rider psychology training for coaches.

We aim to build your confidence and skills step by step. Rather than throwing techniques at you, the course follows a clear learning journey that mirrors what you see in real life, from understanding how riders respond under pressure, to supporting confidence, performance and long-term progress.

We begin with the foundations of rider psychology. This helps you understand how stress, attention and emotional regulation affect learning and performance. From there, we move into the thought patterns and confidence challenges coaches encounter every day, before exploring how to support riders through fear, setbacks and pressure.

Only once these foundations are in place do we introduce performance-focused tools, followed by a strong emphasis on motivation, values and sustainable progress.

This structure ensures you’re not just learning what to do, but why it works, and how to apply it ethically and effectively within your role as a coach.

reflect + practice

Each module has a short quiz to help you check your learning, alongside reflective exercises and support to put your new knowledge and skills into practice.

What you will learn:

week one: Stress, the Nervous System & Learning

This module lays the foundation for the entire programme. You’ll learn how stress and arousal affect riders’ ability to learn, perform and make decisions in the saddle. We explore the nervous system, common stress responses (freeze, fight, flight), and why behaviour changes under pressure.

As a result, you will recognise when a rider is genuinely struggling and how to respond in ways that support regulation, confidence and effective learning.

week two: Attention, Awareness & Mindful Riding

Here we focus on attention and awareness, two key elements of confident, effective riding. You’ll learn how distraction, over-focus and emotional reactivity interfere with performance, and how mindful awareness supports balance, feel and communication with the horse.

This module gives you practical, rider-friendly ways to support focus and presence in lessons, helping riders stay connected to their body, their horse and their riding.

week three: Thoughts, Self-Talk & Psychological Flexibility

In this module, we explore how riders’ thoughts and emotions influence confidence and behaviour. You’ll learn why trying to “think positively” often backfires, and how rigid thinking patterns can keep riders stuck. You’ll gain tools to help riders notice and respond more flexibly to unhelpful thoughts, supporting clearer decision-making, greater confidence and less overthinking in the saddle.

week four: Confidence, Self-Criticism & Comparison

Many riders struggle with confidence, even when appearing highly capable on the surface. This module looks at the role of self-criticism, comparison and harsh internal standards, and how these can quietly undermine performance and enjoyment. In practice, you’ll learn how to support riders to build a more balanced, resilient sense of confidence, maintaining motivation and high standards without tipping into self-doubt or burnout.

week five: Fear, Falls & Loss of Confidence

Fear is a common and often misunderstood challenge in riding. This module explores how fear develops, how it shows up physically and psychologically, and why avoidance or pushing through can reinforce it. You’ll learn how to support riders to rebuild confidence gradually and safely, using psychologically informed approaches that respect both emotional safety and progression in training.

week six: Perfectionism & Procrastination

This module focuses on patterns that often sit beneath stalled progress. You’ll learn how fear and avoidance can drive perfectionism, and why some riders procrastinate or become stuck despite strong motivation.

Understanding these patterns helps you respond with empathy and clarity, supporting riders to move forward with confidence rather than pressure.

week seven: Performance Anxiety & Being Judged

Riding is a highly visible sport, and fear of judgment can significantly affect performance. This module explores performance anxiety, competition nerves, pressure on the yard, in lessons, clinics and competition settings. You’ll learn practical ways to help riders manage nerves, cope with pressure and perform more consistently, without trying to eliminate anxiety.

week eight: Visualisation & Mental Rehearsal for Riding

Visualisation can be a powerful tool when used correctly. In this module, you’ll learn how mental rehearsal works, when it’s helpful, and how to avoid common mistakes that increase pressure or self-doubt. You’ll gain practical ways to support riders in using imagery to build confidence, prepare for competition and return after setbacks.

week nine: Values, Motivation & Meaningful Riding

Motivation often fluctuates when riders become overly focused on outcomes, comparison or external expectations. This module explores the role of values in sustaining motivation, resilience and enjoyment in riding. You’ll learn how to help riders reconnect with what matters to them, supporting long-term engagement and a healthier relationship with performance and progress.

week ten: Goal Setting, Setbacks & Sustainable Progress

The final module brings everything together. You’ll learn how to support riders in setting goals that are realistic, motivating and psychologically supportive, and how to respond constructively when setbacks occur.

This module equips you to help riders maintain momentum, learn from challenges and continue developing with confidence over time.

Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on ethical practice, clear professional boundaries, and knowing when to signpost riders for additional psychological or therapeutic support.

Why I Created the Equus Coach Programme Bringing together psychology, coaching and real-world equestrian experience

I created the Rider Success Coach Programme, having experienced first-hand what can happen when rider psychology is misunderstood or overlooked in coaching. As a rider, I worked with instructors who didn’t understand fear, anxiety or loss of confidence, so rather than feeling supported, I was often left feeling scared, stuck and lacking confidence in the saddle. That experience stayed with me and shaped my work.

As both a coach and psychologist, I’ve always been driven to ensure riders feel understood and supported — not just technically, but mentally and emotionally too. I’ve seen how the right psychological understanding, applied ethically and appropriately, can transform learning, confidence and enjoyment for both rider and horse.

I bring together over 25 years of experience in psychology, coaching and equestrian practice. I hold a Master’s degree in Psychology and specialist training in evidence-based approaches including CBT, ACT, Mindfulness, Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy. I am a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society and a Registered Member of the National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists (NCIP). Alongside this, I am an experienced equestrian and coach. I founded and ran an equine-assisted therapy and riding centre for over ten years, supporting hundreds of riders through therapeutic, educational and coaching programmes.

The Rider Success Coach Programme was created to bridge a gap I’ve seen throughout my career — between the many mindset courses available and the need for approaches that are grounded in evidence-based psychological science. This programme is built on well-established, research-informed principles that are safe and effective, giving coaches the confidence to support rider mindset responsibly and ethically. The aim is to provide practical tools that genuinely work, without overstepping professional boundaries, so riders can achieve better results and enjoy their riding again.
